The apostle Paul, when he wrote 1 Timothy, was concerned that the Christians hold onto the doctrine (set of beliefs) that had been given them. He warned that in the last days many would depart from the faith and believe ideas that were contrary to the Gospel of Christ. Because of this, Paul encouraged Timothy to remind the brothers of the things they had been taught. If he did this, Timothy would be nourished by the words of faith and good doctrine that he was teaching. What is the good doctrine that we need to hang on to? It’s the gospel – the reality of Christ in us.
