2 Peter 1 presents us with an interesting paradox: God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness through our knowledge of Him, and has made it possible to become partakers in His divine nature. Yet Peter goes on to encourage us to make every effort to add to our faith virtue, knowledge, etc. How well do I know God? Am I able to, like Jesus, sleep during a storm, because I know my Father? Or is my faith easily shaken by the difficulties of life? While I don’t need to strive to become more acceptable to God, I can apply diligence to enter into the fullness of what God has available for me.
